Vitoria-Gasteiz is the capital city of the province of Alava, and also of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. With a population of 237,000 inhabitants, it is only the 19th largest city in Spain, and is even second to Bilbao in the Basque Country. However, what the city lacks in size, it more than makes up for in character. Tracing its history to 581AD, this stunning city has a number of impressive churches and cathedrals, which cluster to form a charming old town. The city is also an important industrial hub, home to a number of world-leading brands, such as Mercedes-Benz and Michelin.
A good hotel to opt for when visiting the city is the three-star Hotel General Alava, which combines its excellent centre location with good style, modern facilities and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. For something a little more luxurious, the Gran Hotel Lakua is a beautiful five-star establishment that is located in the northern outskirts of the city and so boasts excellent access to its cultural centre or rural surroundings.
