Introduction to the hotels in Almeria
- PROVINCE OF ALMERIA OVERVIEW
- The Almeria Province is the easternmost part of Andalucia in the southeast of Spain. Attractive, accessible and extremely hot and dry, this distinctive corner of Spain boasts a huge diversity of terrains, towns and coastal resorts, making it a perennially popular tourist destination throughout the year. Due to Almeria’s climate, the region is a key producer of vegetables, housed in thousands of lengthy greenhouses that dot the countryside and create a unique vista.
- Aside from this massive agriculture, Almeria’s economy is also driven by marble quarries, solar power-reseach and production, and mass-tourism. The main city of the province is Almeria, while a number of important coastal areas play their part too. Almeria International Airport is very busy during the summer months, boasting good links to northern Europe and the rest of Spain.
- ATTRACTIONS OF ALMERIA PROVINCE
- A number of excellent resorts line the Almerian coastline, benefiting from the lovely beaches, impressive transport network and wonderful climate. However, the province offers so much more than merely beach and sea. For a start, Almeria is home to Europe’s only desert, which is part of the lower National Park of Sierra Nevada, whose snowy peaks are situated in neighbouring Granada.
- This impressive desert landscape has been the setting for a number of Spaghetti Western films – those ‘wild west’ badlands bestrode by John Wayne et al were often filmed in Almeria. Famous titles include A Fistful of Dollars, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Lawrence of Arabia. Visitors can visit the studio sets left behind from a number of films; a great day out that makes for exceptional photo opportunities.
- Additional attractions well-worth a visit include the ancient Alcazaba in the centre of the city of Almeria, along with its neighbouring 11th Century Wall of Jairan and the 16th century Cathedral. Mojacar is a pretty coastal resort that is located toward the east of the province where, a few kilometres inland, tourists can visit the unusual troglodyte villages, which are actually modern day cave home buried deep into the landscape. These ‘Casas Cuevas’ are a cost-effective choice of housing that are designed to protect the inhabitants from the region’s searing heat. The Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park is also worth visiting.
- CLIMATE OF ALMERIA
- While not quite the hottest corner of Spain (the province of Seville has that distinction), Almeria province is most certainly the driest (in Spain and Europe), thanks to its southern location and the presence of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range beyond it, which protects the area from heavy rainfall. Winter temperatures rarely drop below 15c during the day, while in the summer months the mercury will remain between 30c-45c between June and August, with pretty much no rainfall, and few clouds. Rainfall is less than eight inches per year.
- CITY OF ALMERIA
- The history of the city of Almeria can be traced back to 955, when the resident Moors of Cordoba founded it as their principal port. After the Alhambra Palace in Granada, the city’s Alcazaba is the largest Muslim fortress in the country, and a popular tourist destination today. As with all important cities in southern Spain, Almeria has experienced a tumultuous history, with the Christian Reconquista, Berber pirate landings and a number of earthquakes shaping and changing the city’s makeup over the centuries.
- Today, a busy and modern airport brings in thousands of tourists each year, drawn by the city’s wonderful beaches, rich history and year-round warmth. The city is home to the largest naturist beach in Europe, the newly-discovered Crystal Cave and a charming old town that boasts a 16th century Cathedral.
- Accommodation in the city is highly impressive and diverse, with an impressive array of hotels available to suit all budgets and preferences. Luxurious hotels worth checking out include the four-star Hotel AC Almeria that is located in the historic heart of the city; the four-star Gran Hotel Almeria which is located near to the beach; and the four-star Hotel Husa Gran Fama which is on the main commercial thoroughfare of Almeria.
