Introduction to the hotels in Alicante
PROVINCE OF ALICANTE OVERVIEW
The Province of Alicante boasts a beautiful coastline that is known locally – and internationally – as the Costa Blanca, or ‘White Coast’, thanks to its vast stretches of white sandy beaches that draw millions of tourists every year. Home to Benidorm – one of the forefathers of the now-ubiquitous package holiday destinations – and a number of peaceful and beautiful coastal towns, this hot province is one of Spain’s strongest tourist destinations.
To the north is Valencia, and the southwest border is shared with Murcia, with Alicante Province ranking as the 5th most populous in Spain. Almost one third of the permanent residents in the province are of a foreign nationality – particularly Colombians, Brits and Germans – which is a testament to the region’s appeal throughout Europe and beyond. As a result of this demographic, transport links throughout the province are excellent, with a busy airport, well-maintained toll roads and a wide coastal road transporting the millions of yearly tourists to their awaiting sun loungers, beaches and private villas.
ATTRACTIONS OF ALICANTE
Aside from the fine sunny weather and mile upon mile of beautiful beaches, the attractions of Alicante province are immense. The region is geophysically diverse, boasting mountains, lowlands, olive groves, delightful towns and thriving, modern resorts. For architecture, the historic city centre of Alicante is the place to head, containing a number of 15th and 16th century churches and monuments that simply beg to have their photo taken. Among them is the Castillo de Santa Barbara, which actually dates back to the 9th century and is of Moorish origin. The Iglesia de Santa Maria church is the oldest in the city (dating to the 14th century) and was used as a mosque during the years of Moorish occupation.
Near to the city of Alicante is the Elche Oasis; a World Heritage town that sits amid a palm forest and is home to brilliant botanical gardens, a Moorish museum and a number of delightful cafes where al fresco dining is enjoyed under the shade of the wafting palm tree branches. Families with young children are particularly well-catered for in the province, with three world-class theme and water parks to choose from, namely Terra Natura, Aqualandia and Terra Mitica, all in or around Benidorm.
CLIMATE OF ALICANTE
Notable for its exceptionally dry makeup, there are no major bodies of water in Alicante Province, aside from a few Ramblas, which are dry rivers that are only filled with water following the infrequent torrential downpours that the area receives each year. Along the coast, the dry-air-and-sea-combination results in a number of salt evaporation ponds, which are a distinctive feature of the town of El Fondo. The summer months along the coast are very long, very hot and very dry, while winters are pleasantly mild and also dry; annual rainfall – most likely in Spring and Autumn – is less than 12 inches.
CITY AND HOTELS OF ALICANTE
The city of Alicante has an historic Mediterranean port, stunning beaches, a beautiful old town, a thriving commercial centre and a busy airport, making it one of the leading tourist destinations in Spain, and the country’s 8th largest metropolitan area, with a population of more than 750,000 permanent inhabitants. The city’s history has evidence of human settlement dating back for more than 7,000 years, while Greek and Phoenicians were trading at the port as early as 1,000BC. The scene of a number of Carthage and Roman battles, Alicante’s strategic location near to the gateway of the Mediterranean made it a highly-sought stronghold for centuries; a stronghold that is now dominated by towel-bearing Germans and Brits intent of claiming their rightful places around the thousands of swimming pools and beach bars that dot the city and its shoreline.
There are hundreds of hotels in Alicante, ranging from budget hostel accommodation to plush five-star all-inclusive resorts. A number of the more affordable hotels are clustered around the old town in the centre of the city and, what they might lack in swimming pools and large grounds, they more than make up for in charm, affordability and location. The two-star Goya Hotel is one such example of this type.
For larger, better-facilitated hotels, you have to head to the beaches and more spacious outskirts of the city. The four-star Hotel Eurostars Mediterranea Plaza is the stylish exception to these two rules. Located on the shoulder of the old town and close to the harbour, beaches and commercial area of the city, this large hotel also has massive, well-appointed grounds and plenty of communal facilities.
WHY VISIT ALICANTE?
The province and city of Alicante are two distinct entities; both of which are wonderfully inviting and boast their own unique attractions and appeal. One common uniting factor is, however, the exceptional year-round climate, which is highly inviting everywhere you go in the province, while the varied terrain, beautiful beaches, historic cities and vibrant coastal resorts all combine to make this charming corner of Spain one of the most appealing and popular tourist destinations in Europe.
RESORT AND HOTELS OF BENIDORM
Despite a permanent population of just 64,956, Benidorm is a world-renowned coastal resort where the summer population exceeds half a million for four months of the year. Due to the resort’s rapid growth and the appeal of its beach, much of the resort’s hotels and buildings are high rise, and tightly crowded along the first line of the beach. This vista has earned the resort the nickname ‘The Manhattan of Spain’ or, more colloquially, ‘Beniyork’. There are three distinct areas of Benidorm. The two main halves of the city are called Poniente and Levante, separated at the beach by a rocky promontory, upon which sits the resort’s distinctive and attractive old town. The town’s growth can be traced to the late 1950s, and by the mid-60s the first package holiday tourists began arriving, marking Benidorm’s arrival on the European stage. As with many trailblazers, the area was soon left behind by more up-and-coming destinations and, despite recent attempts to regenerate the resort to attract a wider clientele, Benidorm remains something of a cheap and cheerful option for budget-conscious tourists.
However, hotels in Benidorm are exceptionally varied, with a range of establishments designed to appeal to all ages, budgets and tastes. Beachfront hotels are invariably more expensive, but extremely plentiful and well-facilitated. A good option for families is the two-star Aparthotel Bermudas, which has spacious apartment rooms, good facilities and boasts a lovely location that is within walking distance to much of the resort’s main attractions. For something a little more luxurious, the five-star Barcelo Asia Gardens hotel on Benidorm’s outskirts is a fine choice, and arguably the resort’s best hotel.
RESORT OF ALBIR
The modern town of Albir is a pleasant coastal resort that was planned from scratch as a place for package holiday tourists and thus, while lacking in any rich history, is ideal for families and tourists of all ages thanks to its great accessibility, fine facilities and top-quality accommodation. The town is located north of Alicante, near to Benidorm, and is made up of wide tree-lined avenues, a laid-back atmosphere and an appealing beach. Most of the accommodation in the town is of the apartment kind, with the three-key Aparthotel Venus Albir a firm favourite with families.
RESORT OF ALTEA
The town of Altea is a privileged resort that attracts a fair number of tourists throughout the summer months thanks to its beautiful climate, sweeping beach and the rugged mountains that provide a perfect backdrop. Rich in history and culture, this steep town has tight winding streets and an inimitable charm at every step, with the church of the Virgin de Consuelo an attractive centrepoint. Accommodation in Altea is extremely luxurious, with the five-star Hotel Melia Villa Gadea a fantastic option for any type of traveller.
RESORT OF CALPE
Calpe combines the charm of a typical whitewashed Spanish village with the vibrancy and attractions of a thriving resort town, making this a popular destination for all types of traveller. The beach is beautiful and dominated by a huge rock – called the Penon de Ifach – and the bustling promenade is lined with a nice selection of restaurants and beach bars. The old centre of town dates to the 15th century and is well-worth a visit, boasting an old church and some lovely plazas and gardens. As for accommodation, travellers to Calpe are spoilt for choice, although the Apartments Coral Beach combine affordability, great service and an unbeatable location and will appeal to all.
TOWN OF DENIA
The port town of Denia is an important fishing and transportation hub, with ferries to the Balearic Islands running throughout the day. The bustling centre of the town is rich in history and clusters around the 11th century castle. Additional places of note include the Museo Etnologico and the commercial thoroughfare of Calle de Marques de Campo. There are plenty of exceptional hotels in the town, with the four-star Daniya Denia Spa & Business Hotel being perhaps the pick of the bunch.
CITY OF ELCHE
The city of Elche is a large inland conurbation that is just a short drive south of Alicante and approximately 15km from the beach. This ‘City of Palms’ boasts the only palm forest in Europe, and dates back to the 6th century BC and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the centre of the city, tourists flock to a number of wonderful museums, namely the Municipal Festa Museum and the Pucol Agriculture Museum. With plenty of parks and green areas, visitors have a number of places in which to escape the heat, while the choice of accommodation on offer is impressive, with the four-star Hotel Huerto del Cura a cultured choice popular with couples.
CITY OF JAVEA
Javea is a medium-sized city that is located in the northern area of Alicante Province, some 80km from Alicante city. This lovely coastal city is embedded in between two stunning bays – the Cabo San Martin and the Cabo San Antonio. With a lovely port, a pleasant old town and plenty of charming restaurants, this is a good choice of destination for older couples, who will also love the luxurious four-star Hotel Parador de Javea.
RESORT OF TORREVIEJA
Situated in the south of the province of Alicante, the coastal resort of Torrevieja is a delightfully inviting destination that proves massively popular with northern European holidaymakers and expats thanks to its excellent climate, great transport infrastructure, lovely beach and array of restaurants and bars. Hotels are good, too, particularly the large three-star Hotel Cabo Cervera.
FAMILY FUN
Alicante has a dazzling array of attractions that will appeal to holidaymakers of all ages. Aside from the beautiful beaches of the Costa Blanca, the province also boasts the Safari Park at Vergel, which is a large drive-thru zoo, with free-roaming lions, leopards and wolves, plus a splendid sea life centre with delightful dolphin shows. The entire province has a number of wildlife attractions, with others including the Aitana Safari Park - boasting tigers, elephants and giraffes; and the Terra Natura Wildlife Park - which is on the outskirts of Benidorm. For water-based fun, the Aqualandia water park is extremely large and family friendly, and is located on the outskirts of Benidorm, while there is another of similar size located in Torrevieja. Terra Mitica Theme Park - again located in the immediate vicinity of Benidorm - is Europe's largest theme park, and boasts some thrilling rides and rollercoasters. For older holidaymakers, the Casino Costa Blanca near Villajoyosa is a well-equipped gambling hall that has American and French roulette, Black Jack and a number of coin-swallowing machines for your fluttering pleasure.
LOVELY LANDSCAPES
From the huge forested blanket of terrain that is the Sierra de Escalona in Campoamor, to the unique Rock of Ifach on the northern side of Calpe, the province of Alicante has some breathtaking areas of outstanding natural beauty, that will appeal to nature lovers of all ages. For something dramatic and picturesque, the whole family is sure to love the waterfalls at Les Fonts de Algae, which form a splendid backdrop for a picnic; while the mountain town of Guadalest is a beautiful spot in which to enjoy walks in the Xorta Mountains, and an excellent tapas lunch in the quaint heart of town.
